Live COVID-19 updates: Malaysia reports new high daily COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

KABUL — Afghanistan on Saturday recorded 813 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 86 more deaths from the pandemic in the past 24 hours, raising the total tally to 133,578 with 5,724 deaths, the country’s Public Health Ministry said.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Saturday recorded a new high of daily COVID-19 cases for a second day in a row, with 9,353 infections, bringing the total tally to 827,191, the Health Ministry said.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 11 of the new cases were imported and 9,342 were locally transmitted.

An additional 87 deaths from the pandemic were recorded in the Southeast Asian country, bringing the total deaths to cross the 6,000 mark to reach 6,067.

ADDIS ABABA — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 5,873,990 as of Saturday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 150,517 while 5,117,334 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

DHAKA — Bangladesh reported 8,772 new COVID-19 cases and 185 new deaths on Saturday, taking the tally to 1,009,315 and death toll to 16,189, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 27,884 samples were tested in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Saturday across Bangladesh.
